The McGregor – Mayweather Saga Continues

The talks of an upcoming boxing match between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather still have not slowed down. The talks between the two fighting superstars have been occurring for nearly two years, but it is impossible to truly know if we are getting closer to a fight. We are less likely to see a fight the longer this saga drags out because Mayweather recently celebrated his 40th birthday. It can be confusing to keep up with all of the new information, so here is a detailed timeline of the events surrounding a possible boxing match between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.

The entire feud began when Conor McGregor was a guest on the talk show Conan on July 2nd, 2015. McGregor was there to discuss his upcoming fight with Chad Mendes at UFC 189, but that did not stop him from dissing Mayweather. McGregor affirmed that he would be interested in boxing if the price was right. He also took a shot at Mayweather’s controversial fighting style.

The two fighters got into a battle on social media at the beginning of 2016 when Mayweather claimed McGregor was only famous because of his race. The exchanged ended after each fighter made a few disparaging remarks. The rumors of a potential fight finally started circulating in May 2016. Mayweather claimed he would only come out of retirement to face Conor McGregor, and he began talking with UFC president Dana White to make the fight possible. Around this time, TMZ reported that McGregor was offered $50 million for a fight with Floyd. The social media sparring began again, but it was over before the start of June.

After a quiet few months, the rumors of a fight started again when Conor McGregor obtained his boxing license in the state of California in November 2016. This came only a couple of weeks after McGregor became the first simultaneous two-division champion when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez as the UFC 205 headliner at Madison Square Garden. Dana White, Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather spent most of the month of January 2017 disputing over the money distribution of a potential fight. McGregor finally comes out and says that he expects his next fight to be against Mayweather in an interview on January 28, 2017. He expected the fight to happen sometime in the next year.

Based on all of the information available in the media, it seems like it is only a matter of time before Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather step in a boxing ring together. McGregor and Dana White finally came to an agreement recently where he’ll be permitted to cross into the Boxing arena should he pursue the fight with Floyd.

The main roadblock remaining is still the two alpha males coming to an agreement on how to split the prize money. McGregor seems to be demanding $100 million to fight Floyd, and Floyd has continued to say that his number is also a guaranteed $100 million. Just take a second for that to sink in, as most people have a chance at that kind of money by winning the lottery. We can only hope that the fight lives up to the hype after getting plenty of media attention over the last two years.
