Tattoo History Part-1: Brief History Of Tattoos

brief history of tattoos 49The word tattoo is not only known from the age of my grandfather but it existed over five thousand years ago and is as diverse as the people who wear them.

The word tattoo is believed to have derived from two words- the Polynesian word ‘ta’ that ‘means striking something’ and the Tahitian word ‘tatau’ means ‘to mark something.’

For me Tahitian word has more similarity with the recent word ‘tattoo.’

There are many conceptions regarding the emergence of inking. It is believed that first tattoo might have accidentally emerged. Someone had a small wound and rubbed it with a hand that was dirty with soot and ashes from the fire. Once the wound had healed, they that a mark remained there undyingly.

I believe in this as I have experienced it myself and owned a mark on my hand in this way. Once in childhood I fought with my brother and accidentally he thumped my hand with a lead pencil. The tip of the pencil broke in my palm leaving a mark still visible after the removal of the tip from my hand.

Everyday we talk about tattoo in this blog and may be some of you do not know the emergence of tattoos. So, keep visiting to know the history of tattoo from all the corners of the world and if you want to help me with some information regarding it then you are most welcome. I will be writing about the history of tattoos of different cultures and countries in between my posts.
