$278,000 of taxpayers’ money has already been gobbled up by the New Zealand prisons. As expected, the tattoo removal scheme had virtually no significant effect on the re-offending rate. The reasons behind introduction of scheme are inconceivable.
There is no logic in blending tattoos with crime. How can tattoo removal change perceptions of a criminal mind? There are more criminals without inked skins than the inked ones. Even gang members dedicated to their ‘ill-mission’ are hell-bent to accept any change. Today the art of tattooing has morphed into something very sublime and is not at all related with crime or criminals. Instead of wasting money on bizarre schemes like this, authorities should spend time and money on molding prisoners mind and giving them hope and direction towards a better future.
