‘Skin Deep’: An expo narrating the history of tattooing

skin deepSkin Deep: A History of Tattooing, exhibition is organized by the National Maritime Museum, London. Drown yourself into the enigmatic history of tattooing running over the past 200 years. The diverse objects displayed in the exhibition illustrate the development of the art of tattooing till date.

The exhibition pierces deep into Captain James Cook’s first encounters of tattooing in the South Pacific to its evolution as an art, fashion and a statement of freedom in the contemporary society. Apart from the needles collected by James Cook, the exhibition include a portrait of Poetua, daughter of Orio, a chief of one of the Society Isles who bears small tattoos on her arms; an eighteenth century tattooing mallet, and much more.

The exhibition kicked off on 3rd December 2005 and will continue till 5th March 2006. The rare art will be showcased at the Aberdeen Maritime Museum this weekend.
