Angelina Jolie's Tattoos

Angelina Jolie is quite popular for her body art. She has atleast a dozen of tattoos on her body. Though her tattoos could not be seen in her movies as they are usually covered in make ups, she is admired for choosing the best original designs of tattoos. Her tattoos are a mix of different languages having various meanings.

1. Back tattoos

The collection of the back tattoos of Angelina Jolie has also been increasing in numbers and as much as the tattoos in her arms. She has also edited some version of her back tattoos. Her Japanese kanji tattoo on her left shoulder, which meant “death”, was covered by a detailed Buddhist prayer of protection. It was made in the name of her first adopted son Maddox. It is in the Cambodian language Khmer. It translates to “May your enemies run far away from you. If you acquire riches, may they remain yours always. Your beauty will be that of Apsara. Wherever you may go, many will attend, serve and protect you, surrounding you on all sides”.

She has the phrase “Know Your Rights” tattooed just below the base of her neck in gothic style.

Her lower back is the area that has been added to the most. Originally, on either side of her spine, she had a small dragon and two tiny tattoos of tribal style designs. However on a trip to Thailand, she had that work topped by a large tiger design. The artwork of the tiger is in the traditional Thai style and the tattoo was also done traditionally. The artist worked by hand with the help of a long needle which slides inside an empty tube, causing thousands of punctures at one time.

2. Arm tattoos

Actress Angelina Jolie has the classic American-style of mixed designs with no background patterning on both of her arms. The designs are not fit together and are spaced out. Originally, the tattooing on her left bicep was the name “Billy Bob” (Thorton, her 2nd husband) and a black tribal dragon located just below that. Both these tattoos were later removed with laser treatment and cannot be seen anymore on her bicep. Before she got new work in the same space, one used to see faint traces of the original tattoos. Now, there is a tattoo in her left upper arm with a list of the coordination of latitudes and longitudes for the birthplaces of all her children: adoptees Maddox from Cambodia, Zahara from Ethiopia, Pax from Vietnam, Shiloh born in Namibia, and her twins Vivienne and Knox born in France. There are six sets of coordinates for her six children. For each of her twins, she has duplicated the France numbers twice.

Her right inner forearm features a quote from Tennessee Williams. The line reads “A prayer for the wild at heart, kept in cages.” This tattoo is a coverup for what used to be a tattoo of a Japanese kanji.

Angelina has an Arabic tattoo on her left forearm which means “will” i.e. determination. This piece of tattoo seems to be a cover up tattoo of another piece of ink of the time of her marriage to Thornton. That same arm also features a tattoo of the letter “H,” in honor of her older brother, James Haven, and the Roman numeral 13. During press appearances for her movie “Salt,” another two new flourishes could be seen on her arm.

In early April 2011, it was reported that on Angelina’s upper arm, a seventh line of coordinates has been tattooed , below the six sets of coordinates of her children that signifies their birth locations. There has been a rumor that the string of numeric denotes the latitude sequence of some location in North America, which is known to be the birthplace of her partner Brad Pitt.

For a character in the movie ‘Wanted’, she increased her tattoo bank even further. She has repeated her tattoo “strength of will” in multiple languages and has duplicated her tattoo “know your rights” in Latin. On her left hand, a floral tattoo design was added which went down to her forearm and then to her hand. The tattoo designs were matched to the gun which her character uses in the movie. The patterns lined up in a continuous design when she held the weapon.

3. Tattoos on leg and stomach

Angelina has inked three types of different tattoos on her stomach among which one was a cover up of another. She used to have a blue dragon tattoo on the left side of her stomach which she apparently did not remember of getting and explained it to be a woke up with it experience. As she was dissatisfied with the design, she chose to cover it up with a large, solid black cross, and later remarked that when people see the the top of the tattoo sticking up out of the waistband of her pants, some people think she’s carrying a gun.

Her second stomach tattoo is a phrase in Latin that is located just below her navel. The translation of “Quod me netrit me destruit” is “What nourishes me also destroys me.”

Many women worry about stomach tattoos that their artwork might be damaged by the stretching of the skin during pregnancies. There are both good and bad reports on this front. The first is yes, tattoos can be ruined by the stretching of the skin, so you must keep on check how fast you gain weight. The second is, if you want to avoid any stomach tattoo damages then you should daily moisturize your skin and drink lots of water. Moisturizing your skin with cocoa butter is very beneficial. Your ink can be protected if the skin does not stretch quickly and is kept hydrated. Angelina also revealed to the press, a tattoo inked in her inner thighs which she claims to be for her partner Brad.
